The Bad News Bears Win a Game!

Using a wily procedural maneuver to tie Republican hands, House Democrats managed to pass, by a vote of 234-188, legislation that will allow the Bush tax cuts benefiting only the wealthiest Americans to expire. I wonder how many of those 234 would still have their jobs if they’d done this before the election.

I also wonder how Senate Democrats will screw things up.

  1. I’m trying to figure out a single scenario in which the senate dems won’t screw things up.

  2. The screw up was not taking these votes prior to the midterm election to see if you could put the screws to at least one Senate Republican to get them to cross over. At this point, they’re probably less likely to do that, so all the options are bad. They could hold a vote and force a filibuster, but if Republicans resist it (or keep the defectors to ne), then nothing is accomplished except the expiration of ALL tax cuts prior to the next Congress. Which means a tax increase on lower and middle income folks. It would also likely derail the rest of the lame duck agenda.

Interesting. We’ll see what happens. Again, don’t understand why this wasn’t done prior to the election.

  4. Same way they always do – endless posturing and inaction.
