In fact, not a cent of Zuckerberg’s money has gone toward hiring counselors, social workers or nurses. Meanwhile, “there have been DRAMATIC cuts to wraparound services,” wrote Mike Maillaro, Newark Teachers Union’s director of communication and research, in an e-mail. Last year, every attendance counselor in the district was eliminated.
Hawthorne Avenue reports losing eight support staff members since 2011, including a guidance counselor and two instructional coaches. The school has neither a music teacher nor a librarian.

I started wondering after Vancouver whether cities would continue handcuffing themselves to host the Olympics. When I heard the total bill for the Sochi games, I figured the Olympics would have to change to survive. Things aren’t exactly going smoothly for Rio, from the sounds of it. I wonder if the Olympics will end up being like the Super Bowl, where it will just bounce between a few sites. Namely, those that have already hosted in the past and are therefore the only ones who can afford them.

There have been rumors that they’re begging London to agree to do it again in 2016, in part because the sites already exist and could be rehabbed.

My first thought was that the Olympics might eventually kill themselves with excess, but then I realized past hosts would likely be fine with a second, third, etc. go-around.
