A Few More

A few more.

* Wikipedia is doomed. Doomed!

* Storage closets of the American Museum of Natural History. With awesome slideshow, via MeFi.

* Tim Morton makes the simple but necessary point that as the only sentient agents in the area—the only beings with “response ability”—we are “responsible” for climate change whether we are “causing” it or not.

* Biggest solar deal ever announced. The article goes on to say “When fully operational, the companies say the facility will provide enough electricity to power 845,000 homes — more than exist in San Francisco — though estimates like that are notoriously squirrely.”

* Washington Monthly tries to suss out Judd Gregg’s erratic behavior.

* Legalize it? The real question is why haven’t we yet.

* And Krugman (via Ezra Klein) says we may just be screwed.

And I don’t know about you, but I’ve got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach — a feeling that America just isn’t rising to the greatest economic challenge in 70 years. The best may not lack all conviction, but they seem alarmingly willing to settle for half-measures. And the worst are, as ever, full of passionate intensity, oblivious to the grotesque failure of their doctrine in practice.

Gregg Withdraws

Gregg withdraws. Huzzah!

UPDATE: FiveThirtyEight gets in the line of the night on this, going off the official White House statement on the withdrawal.

Here is the statement the White House just put out on kicking Judd Gregg to the curb, in full:

“Senator Gregg reached out to the President and offered his name for Secretary of Commerce. He was very clear throughout the interviewing process that despite past disagreements about policies, he would support, embrace, and move forward with the President’s agenda. Once it became clear after his nomination that Senator Gregg was not going to be supporting some of President Obama’s key economic priorities, it became necessary for Senator Gregg and the Obama administration to part ways. We regret that he has had a change of heart”.

Translation: Gregg asked us for the gig and lied to us, so eff him, this is his fault.

As one longtime White House correspondent just told me, “I have never seen a White House statement that kicks someone in the balls that hard before.”

Do we all understand now that you can’t work with people who won’t work with you? Sounds like we just might.

* NYC’s maple-syrup smell mystery resolved! It was New Jersey. (Really!)

* The AP lacks a basic understanding of fair use. More at MeFi.

* Raccoons have invaded the White House. Sadly the Secret Service has only trained for nighttime raccoon assault.

* How Obama is screwing up the stimulus: failure to counteract zombie Republican lies. More on this from Steve Benen.

* Also on the Obama-screwing-up front: he’s publishing op-eds in dead-tree media. Nobody reads newspapers anymore, gramps!

* Though they do, apparently, read alt-weeklies.

* Also: Judd Gregg still sucks.

* Climate Progress now has one-stop anti-nuclear shopping.

* The nonprofit industrial complex.

* How various songs react to Ze Frank’s voice-activated drawing applications.

* And via Kottke: Who wouldn’t want to take a class entitled “What’s So Great about The Wire?”?

Dr. Sanjay Gupta breathes a sigh of relief as Judd Gregg assumes the proud role of “worst Obama administration appointee ever.” What a debacle this is.
