* Discover has a piece on the Boskops, supposedly a race of super-brained hominids who died out tens of thousands of years ago. It’s a really good hook for a story, if not exactly current scientific theory.

* Confirmed: Here comes Avatars. Is there any story in Hollywood that isn’t “scaled” for trilogy?

* Duke University in the news! A study out of the Department of Sociology suggests a limited, local deterrence effect in the month in which a person is executed. If this were a genuine cause of declined homicides, why would it be the “first” and “fourth” months and not months one through four? The weird specificity of the claim makes it sound like statistical noise. Via MeFi.
