His Name Was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, and He Was an American

Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country? The answer is no. That’s not America. Is there something wrong with a seven-year-old Muslim-American kid believing he or she could be president? Yet I have heard senior members of my own party drop the suggestion that he is a Muslim and might have an association with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America.

I feel particularly strong about this because of a picture I saw in a magazine. It was a photo essay about troops who were serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. And one picture at the tail end of this photo essay, was of a mother at Arlington Cemetery and she had her head on the headstone of her son’s grave. And as the picture focused in, you could see the writing on the headstone, and it gave his awards – Purple Heart, Bronze Star – showed that he died in Iraq, gave his date of birth, date of death, he was 20 years old. And then at the very top of the head stone, it didn’t have a Christian cross. It didn’t have a Star of David. It has a crescent and star of the Islamic faith.

And his name was Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan. And he was an American. He was born in New Jersey. He was fourteen years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could serve his country and he gave his life.

Powell Endorses

leave a comment »

It hasn’t aired in North Carolina yet, but TPM reports that disgraced former Secretary of State American hero Colin Powell did indeed endorse Barack Obama this morning on Meet the Press. More at TPM Election Central.

UPDATE: Within a half hour, Drudge is there to pull the inevitable lever:

UPDATE 2: MSNBC has the video.

UPDATE 3: As I wrote in the comments, contrary to my expectations before watching it I found this a very eloquent and moving endorsement that among other things completely eviscerates the smear campaign McCain has run, most devastatingly the neo-McCarthyism of people like Michelle Bachmann and the really vile disparagement of Muslim-Americans from high-ranking officials in the Republican party. It’s one hell of an endorsement from a figure who still matters to a lot of people, if not to lefty bloggers.

Endorsements

Barack Obama has attracted the support of nearly three times as many newspapers as John McCain, according to a round-up from Editor and Publisher, as the endorsement season hits a frenzied pitch.

Obama picked up the backing of several major dailies on Friday, including the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune, which has never endorsed a Democratic nominee for president.

In 2004, these numbers were much closer, roughly 50-50, due to the high prevalence of right-leaning local papers.

Along the same lines, Matt is surprised by the number of Kay Hagan endorsements.

The big endorsement right now, though, looks to be Colin Powell’s, who is again rumored to be making a bid to restore his reputation by endorsing Obama this weekend on Meet the Press.

Real Veepstakes

leave a comment »

I guess today’s the day for the final, final, actually final veepstakes prediction. On a long-term strategic level I still favor the Virginia strategy, and so when I was throwing down my predictions in the Edge of the American West thread last night that’s what I went with: Warner / Romney, second choice Kaine / Romney.

But the longer this goes on and is dragged out the more it seems to me they need a huge name, and there’s really just a handful people on that list: Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, maybe a wildcard like Colin Powell or Chuck Hagel. Expectations are at a fever pitch; the fact that’s it’s the Friday before the convention and I expected a Kaine announcement Tuesday or Wednesday (if not weeks ago) makes me think it may actually be Hillary.

If that’s the way Obama’s behind-the-scenes geniuses think it has to be, I guess that I’m at peace with it, but good lord if it going to be a crazy famous superstar I hope that it’s Al Gore.

Well, That’s Unexpected

Colin Powell to endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention? So says Bill Kristol.

This is pretty big news, if it’s true.

UPDATE: Or, you know, not.
