Next Week @MarquetteU: Pop Culture Dinner #1 on Dan Harmon’s ‘Community’
Next Thursday, October 9, from 5-7 PM we’ll be meeting in Marquette Hall 105 to discuss the unkillable comedy series COMMUNITY, recently cancelled on NBC only to be saved by Yahoo!’s new online streaming service. Famously starring Marquette alum Danny Pudi in the point-of-view role, the series was also created by Marquette drop-out Dan Harmon, who left the university after one semester. From this we can undoubtedly conclude that the series is based on Marquette.
We’ll watch an episode of the show while we eat pizza and then talk about some of the reasons for its niche popularity and cult status, as well as some of Harmon’s ideas about narrative and mythic structure, his other projects, and his controversial public persona. It will be just like that one episode of COMMUNITY where Abed takes a semester class on trying to figure out who was the boss on WHO’S THE BOSS, except we’ll solve it all in just one night.
