In 1914, by popular demand and without reference to its actual pacifist origins, US President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day in the United States of America.

  1. The Julia Ward Howe comment was not the origin of our current Hallmark-and-FTD-backed observance. It is a product of the commercial instincts of retailer John Wanamaker and the obsession of Anna Jarvis.
