  1. Of course it’s not just guns. Gun violence in US is driven by the widespread, lunatic availability of guns but also by our lack of a mental health safety net, our extreme income inequality, our racial heterogeneity coupled with structural and personal racism, and misogyny/domestic violence. Attack all five.

  2. On a personal note: I live in Connecticut, but not particularly close to Newtown (45 minutes away from home, work, or wife’s work). I have never seen the state so collectively sorrowful. The only time I have seen any place as collectively impacted was at CWRU in 2001.

    And yes to everything you put in the comments, though I will point out that Connecticut is generally thought to have one of the best social safety nets (at least, that’s what state legislators all seem to say regularly – it is often thought that people move to CT to take advantage of that system). That is adding to the “if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere” sentiment that seems to be showing up in the local news coverage.
