‘A Blatant Attempt to Grant Amnesty to Potentially Millions of Illegal Aliens in This Country’ (And God Bless It)

with 4 comments

It looks like Obama has given up hope on any sort of grand compromise on immigration; he’s ending deportations for people who pose no threat to public safety, at least on a prioritized, case-by-case basis. Deserved praise from Adam Serwer and Steve Benen.

Again–given that the Defense of Marriage Act is still in force, the decision to treat LGBT families as families for the purposes of this policy is incredibly significant. This decision is precisely the kind of ballsy move that liberals are constantly demanding that the administration make. For once–and let’s not pretend the Latino vote in 2012 isn’t a part of the political calculus here–they’re actually doing it.

I imagine the terrible optics of this story had something to do with the decision too.

Maybe he’s finally learning.

  1. This is one of a thousand or more “families” , where an american is “married” to an illegal alien. How can they have lived here for 19 years, and say they did everything right? Is it right to have an illegal resident stay ? Can he hire him as a nanny taking care of him ? Is anyone working, or are they on “assistance” ? It sounds to me with all these organizations helping illegal residents, is more than the assistance most legal Americans are getting. The president must find ways to gain votes, and he has been trying to befriend different groups. It sounds like a thousand or more are here taking jobs from us. How come it takes this many years to notice the many who have married illegally, I presume, if they are not citizens, and should have gone back home after their visit, or both move to Australia. Would they allow them to live in Australia under these circumstances ?
Are there children in this family ? If we are to decide on individual cases, they are not giving enough information, as usual.. no news, really… just a lot of words, and organizations. What is the bottom line here ?

  2. “If we are to decide on individual cases, they are not giving enough information, as usual” – I believe, actually, a judge is supposed to decide on individual cases, which are often in the public record (so if you want to shed a little light on your ignorance, go for it). Our decision doesn’t hold much legal water.

Gerry, it seems your cousin Mike has transmigrated into a fifty-year-old woman.

  3. “no news, really… just a lot of words, and organizations.”

What exactly do you think news is?

  4. If by “grand compromise” you mean “utter capitulation to Republicans”, then thank goodness.
