The Context of All Things

with 3 comments

It would be more comforting if Murdoch were an ideologue, but what the Banksy Simpsons sequence points to … is less the desire to promote an ideology than to contain all ideologies for the purpose of profit, with entertainment being the preferred container. What Murdoch seems to want to be is the context of all things, the ultimate Manichean media shell. Inside, left v. right, tree hugger v. petrol head, local v. transnational. Outside, profit, the void, and Murdoch, looking down.

  1. While I agree with this assessment of what Banksy means – the irony of the whole Banksy thing is that Fox probably made more money off of that than any other Simpson’s-related airing for quite some time (possibly since the movie) – I would say that Murdoch is still an ideologue. It’s Fox News, not Fox Television, that influences people’s policy ideas and political opinions.

  2. both are true – he’s an ideologue AND his company, like any entertainment company, want to be “the context of all things.” but no individual left-wing utterance has much immediate utility in any context.
