  1. NY Times is making a bet that other news organizations will follow suit and that at a certain point, despite what people pay, they will resume paying for news. It still makes no sense, though, given that before the rise of the internets, newspapers’ number one source of revenue was advertisements not subscription fees.

    Right. I don’t think you can understand journalism in the U.S. until you accept that the person who purchases the newspaper, or watches the nightly news, is not the customer; they’re the product being sold…
