Dennis Kucinich really needs to read my blogHealth care reform is a major progressive victory. There’s never a final end to struggle; we take what’s here and start again.

  1. a) i told you so! (about kucinich’s politics)

    and

    b) progress is non-linear. there is no guarantee that this bill will be improved enough even to sustain itself against rising costs, regardless of how hard progressives fight for it. from a structural perspective kucinich’s extreme pessimism about the current bill is better-founded than its reluctant supporters’ moderate pessimism.

i don’t consider the man himself to be all that great (maybe he could try being more active BEFORE the last minute on these things), but nothing he’s saying is incorrect.

  2. a) Yeah, well, there hasn’t been a vote yet. I’ll be shocked, and pretty furious, if Kucinich has the stones to personally kill the bill if it comes down to that.

    b) I just don’t agree. The bill has protections and subsidies that are important, and which will genuinely help people who, unlike you and I, don’t get free health insurance from our employer. This is not the bill I want nor is it the bill I would have written, but it doesn’t make things worse and opposing it on the grounds that it isn’t a pony is, at this stage, really indefensible. It’s not this or Kucinichcare; it’s this or nothing, for another twenty years. The experts say this bill is much better than nothing and we should listen to them.

Supporting this bill doesn’t mean we can’t still organize for the public option in 2011 and 2013.
