Though I’d prefer to think this is a leftward turning of the tide, I’m afraid it’s probably just a case of conservative overreaching.

I said on Twitter last night that I suspect the most likely consequence will be an increase in Mitt Romney’s poll numbers. But all the same both party inertia and public opinion are tough to steer; even if Republicans try to pull back now the damage could already be done for 2012.
