I’ve read 11 of the first list, and 18 of the second one. The big difference between the two is that the second contains several more women authors (yes, there are more than 5 who have written great novels of science fiction), as well as several books by Thomas M. Disch, one of the greatest writers the genre has known. OK, I’m going to say it: that first list sucks, at least as a “greatest hits” compilation, if not a “books you should read” list.

Oh, and the second list is no great shakes, either.

That last comment was supposed to be humorous. I tried to put a “close grump” html tag in there, but WordPress ate it.

You are a grump! Though you make good points. The first list also seems very historical, even “old,” which is why I think I read so many of those books for my exams — some writers from the 70s make it, but almost no one from the 80s or beyond. Not even Neuromancer makes its cut!
